On July 9, a fire tore through the Fujian Huiteng Shoes factory in Jinjiang, a city in southeastern Fujian Province, China - a major footwear manufacturing hub - killing at least 28 people. The company's owner and several other relevant personnel have been detained, and the company's bank accounts have been frozen. Authorities said rescue efforts were hampered because materials stored in the stairwells obstructed firefighters and rescue crews attempting to reach the upper floors. Notably, according to Open Supply Hub, the factory underwent an environmental risk assessment audit as recently as January 2026, underscoring how audits often fail to identify basic fire-safety and structural risks.
